Full-day and special experiences

If you’d like to spend more time exploring the fun of dyeing, I can create a longer experience for you and your friends (up to four people) based on your interests. Beginners who want an overall introduction to dyeing can spend the morning dyeing cotton fabric and do a silk scarf or two in the afternoon. Quilt makers might prefer to spend a day dyeing cotton fabric to use later in one of their projects. Fashion lovers can decide to concentrate on silk scarves.

fabric on line.JPGWhatever you focus on, you’ll spend a wonderful day exploring colour and pattern. The energy and excitement that is stirred up in these sessions has been a lot of fun. My well-equipped dyeing studio is located on the ground floor facing the view and handy to the clothesline outdoors where we dry fabric in the sea breezes.

I encourage students to follow their own paths as soon as they understand the basics. You can browse through my collection of books and magazines on dyeing and painting fabric for more inspiration. You’ll leave with your creations plus an informative handout so that you can do more dyeing on your own.

Try something special

Special experiences can be created in any of following areas. Some previous experience in dyeing is useful but not necessary. Other individual projects are also possible; just let me know what you have in mind!

Colour mixing  Using ten or twelve single-chemical dyes, we’ll experiment with mixing a wide variety of colours.

painting clamped fabric.JPGMechanical resists  We’ll do an intensive exploration of folding, stitching, and clamping fabrics to create patterns by resisting the dye. We may try overdyeing some of the fabrics to get even richer results.

Fun with thickened dyes We’ll apply thickened dyes to fabric using brushes, squeeze bottles, syringes, simple stamps, and stencils. We’ll experiment applying the dyes to wet or dry fabric and combining them with thin dyes. The possibilities are endless!

Monotype prints  This is one of my favourite techniques. Using thickened dye, we’ll try different ways of making monotype prints on fabric, and possibly also on watercolour paper.
