I love listening to live performances of Cape Breton fiddle and piano music—the jigs, strathpeys, and reels made for dancing as well as listening, and then trying to translate the complex melodies and rhythms into visual images. Now I’m taking piano lessons to try to understand the music better.

Cape Breton fiddle melodies have flowing lines and the piano keeps the rhythm strong. This musical quilt welcomes spring: in the left panel, some snow still falls, but by the right panel, the trees are blooming and the fiddlers are coming out of hibernation.
This quilt was made from my own hand dyed cotton fabrics and commercial fabrics and machine quilted.

Cape Breton fiddle–piano music is energetic with a strong down beat. After a concert, the performers usually just go to someone’s house and keep on playing.
